Tuscany is an Italian region situated in the central-western part of the country, between the northern part of the Tyrrhenian Sea and the Apennines Mountains.
Tuscany is easily accessible from England thanks to the international airports of Pisa and Florence. From small medieval villages to gorgeous beaches bordered by forests and pine trees, Tuscany offers many unique places. Explore the coastline stretching from Carrara to the peninsula of Monte Argentario, south of Grosseto. For your stopovers, there are many harbours you can access along the coast. If you wish to visit Pisa and its famous tower, you can safely moor in the mouth of the Arno.
A cruising area which is loved by many boaters, Tuscany is also well known for its archipelago stretching from Tuscany to Corsica. The archipelago’s main island is Elba. With 147 kilometres of beaches and sheltered coves, you will be able to stop in one of the four harbours of the island: Portoferraio, Marciana Marina, Campo nell’Elba and Porto Azzuro.
20 nautical miles northwest of Elba, discover the mountainous island of Capraia and make a stopover in one of the many idyllic anchorages the island has to offer.
The islands of Pianosa and Montecristo are protected due to their history and you must apply for access. Also it is not permitted to sail near the island of Gorgona (over a zone of 2 nautical miles), it still is a penal colony. 25 nautical miles east of Montecristo, you should plan to stop in the charming and picturesque port located in the northeastern part of Giglio Island.
Tuscany enjoys a Mediterranean climate with almost 300 days of sunshine per year. Summers are hot and dry with temperatures over 25 degrees Celsius from June through to September. In winter, the climate stays mild but there can be important variations between the coast and inland. Prevailing wind in summer blows moderately from the west-northwest. Around Elba, winds tend to blow from the southeast and alternate with calmer periods. Spring and the beginning of autumn are the perfect seasons for a cruise in Tuscany as temperatures are pleasant, nature is flowering and colours are sumptuous.
