14 Catamarans to Rent in Tuscany

Catamaran charter in Tuscany

Don’t miss out on these highlights

Medieval UNESCO World Heritage Site

Rather than simply visiting the standard Pisa and Florence, both of which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Tuscany, perhaps you would prefer to visit a medieval town with world famous white wine and an urban landscape to bring you back to the Renaissance. San Gimignano is the perfect place to check out if you crave medieval architecture and a strong food and wine culture during your catamaran charter! The town is characterized by well-preserved stone towers overlooking the entire city and walls that circle the perimeter. Don’t forget to also try out the locally produced specialties, such as Vernaccia de San Gimignano, the finest white wine of Italy, or the delicate, aromatic flavours of San Gimignano saffron. If you prefer the darker history of the middle ages and are brave enough, head to the Museum of Torture, which will give you a closer look at the devices used to inflict pain and suffering during this time period.

Elba Island

If you are curious about French history, plan a visit to Elba island, where French emperor Napolean was exiled in 1814. It is the largest of the eight islands that make up the Tuscan Archipelago. Here, you can uncover the Napoleonic residences and see traces of Roman architectural styles present on the island. Due to its clear water and superb beaches, it is the perfect place to rent a catamaran and relax or discover the natural landscapes around you! The seabed surrounding this archipelago is rich in minerals that aids in the growth of the natural flora and fauna, making it an excellent location for snorkelling, swimming, diving, or any other water activities you enjoy. Your charter holiday would not be complete in Tuscany without a visit to Maremma Park, which is situated just north of Elba island, so be sure to head there next. This natural park is well-regarded for its sandy beaches, crystalline water, and incredible hiking trails.

Pisa and Florence: The essentials

Culture is overflowing in these two cities, and we recommend you try to visit both! Pisa is bustling with young people, beautiful walking streets, and of course, the Leaning Tower of Pisa. As far as Florence, the food culture is flourishing, and for good reason. Tasting the authentic cuisine of Florence is an essential. Aside from the gelato, you must try the crostini neri (a smooth liver spread on crusty bread), pasta e fagioli (hearty bean and pasta soup), or a traditional Italian coffee after your meal. Besides just food, there is also an abundance of museums and cultural centres that you can choose from based on your interests, including the Uffizi Gallery, which holds the largest collection of Renaissance art in the world.

Conditions for your catamaran charter

With the most warmth and ideal temperatures between May and October (averages of 25°C), we recommend you charter a catamaran during these months. This is the summer period in Italy and will represent the nicest conditions with relatively low rainfall and mild temperatures—perfect weather for swimming!

The downside of chartering during these months is that there is light wind, so it might be necessary to use the engine for some time during your charter holiday. Towards the end of summer, however, the wind will pick up due to the Mistral, a strong wind blowing in a north-westerly direction from southern France. This is better for more seasoned sailors with a higher experience level and greater navigational skills. All along the Tuscan coast you will be able to find plenty of ports and bays to anchor in based on your preferences.

When travelling to Italy, there are plenty of airports, train stations, and bus routes to serve you. The Florence or Pisa international airports are the closest large airports to get to this region and eventually your embarkment destination. If you are travelling from somewhere nearby, going by car is also an option. If you choose to drive, you can enjoy a scenic route along the way!
