This transatlantic trip (outward or return) requires a B1/B2 visa and or ESTA applications for nationals whose countries are in the VISA waiver program.
  • What is the FFV licence?

The ‘FFV’ license is issued by the French Sailing Federation. You must take out one before embarking. You can obtain the license from many sailing clubs/schools near you or directly from the federation's website. http://www.ffvoile.fr/ffv/web/
  • What equipment/clothing should I pack for my transatlantic crossing?

    ♦ The basics for sailing:
    • Complete follies: boots (breathable), watch jacket, watch overalls
    • Boat gloves
    • Headlamp with spare batteries, with red light function for night
    • Shopping bag so you always have your follies available

    ♦ For sleeping:
    • Sleeping mask
    • Ear plugs
    • Sleeping bag
    • Hygiene (taking into account the need to save water and energy)
    • Sea water soap (you can find it at ship chandlers, at the Vieux Campeur or Nature et Découverte It can also be used as a shampoo and shaving foam)
    • Micellar water (practical to use with a spray, especially for the face)
    • Toilet mitt
    • Detergent for washing clothes by hand (with seawater)

    ♦ Health:
    • Hat or cap
    • Sun cream in sufficient quantity. The only effective protection is an index 50 sunscreen applied every three hours.
    • 1 or even 2 pairs of sunglasses with sufficient protection (with a cord so you don't lose them)
    • Gourd (or rigid water bottle to keep)
    • Personal pharmacy for minor ailments (plasters, disinfectants, physiological serum, cream for burns, medication for pain or seasickness, etc.) and for personal specificities. The on-board pharmacy is supposed to be open only if we are missing equipment
    • Personal, differentiated bottle of hydro-alcoholic gel (with first name, for example)
    • Surgical masks for trips ashore

    • Pocket knife (ideally multi-purpose Leatherman-type)
    • Standard flashlight: fits in the brace and lights up on contact with water. They can be found in hardware shops, for between 15 and 20 euros
    • Portable battery (ideally with solar panel): for recharging tablets/readers and other personal electrical devices
    • Something to keep you busy: music, a few books, games, etc.
    • Pen and notebook for possibly taking notes

    ♦ Remarks:
    • For anything liquid, prefer screw-top containers
    • For clothes, manage to minimize their number and weight while still having clothes that can live with all types of weather
    • You don't want to risk getting cold. It's better to have three good layers of clothing than to pile them on. Here's the principle:
    • Layer 1: underwear that sticks to the body, allowing perspiration to escape (underpants, tights, socks). It's best to avoid cotton, which retains moisture and makes you feel cold. Uniqlo fabric is a good compromise.
    • Layer 2: a jumper to keep in the heat. Avoid wool, which dries badly. A good fleece works well
    • Layer 3: a shift jacket to cut out wind and water
    • Cotton washed in seawater will be particularly stiff and scratchy. Technical T-shirts are more suitable
    .
