Such a popular location sees an influx of tourists during the summer months, especially July and August. This period sees the most superb sunshine and offers the best nightlife. If you would prefer a quieter time which still benefits from good sailing conditions, then you should consider chartering your yacht in very early summer or even between September and October. Spring and early summer sees cooler water temperatures, so if you are a fan of swimming, you may wish to choose autumn months which also sees the strength of the Meltemi winds decrease substantially. Temperatures in the summer months average the mid-high 20s, ensuring a fantastic sun holiday.
The island of Santorini needs no introduction, and many of its most famous activities are no secret – the sunset in Oia is wonderful and warrants the eruption of applause when the sun descents beneath the horizon – but here are some off-the-map things to do on your yacht charter holiday that you may never have considered before:
Not literally into the depths of a volcano, but a scuba dive into the mesmerising underwater landscape shaped by the volcanic island. Seeing the beauty of Santorini from your chartered yacht is amazing, but the caldera deserves to be explored from a fresh perspective, and the experience is truly magical. Not only that, but you can also discover the remains of a sunken boat which now houses curious critters.
Yet another unique feature of Santorini stemming from the presence of volcanic activity, this fun swim is something a little unusual. Make sure you have packed a swimsuit on your yacht that you do not mind getting ruined, as this swim is not like a typical dip in the Mediterranean. The cove of Agios Nikolaos is the most popular spring for swimmers, as temperatures in the water reach a pleasant 35°C. It is said that there are benefits from immersion in these springs, ranging from skin treatment to joint pain relief. Either way, this popular swimming spot in Santorini should be top of the list of things to do.
It seems open air cinemas are making a comeback across the world, but Santorini has always been home to some great viewing experiences. Once you have docked your yacht in the marina, journey up to Kamari Village where you can find a stunning set up featuring a large cinema screen, comfy chairs, and gorgeous greenery. Try some of the decadent wines on offer or have a refreshing beer. Great weather, a great ambiance, and great movies – what more could you want from Santorini?
If you fancy trekking through some of the most breathtaking scenery of the Mediterranean, look no further than the hike from Fira to Oia. It is nine kilometres long, but you can join and leave the trail as you wish. Expansive views of the Aegean Sea complimented by the scattered white villages for which Santorini is so renowned make this a truly remarkable experience. By the time you return to your yacht, you will be ready to relax for the night. Perhaps it is best to do this early in the morning, or late in the evening to avoid the higher temperatures of midday. Don’t forget to bring lots of water!
Nicknamed The Pompeii of Greece , this fascinating site displays the remains of an ancient town devastated by a volcanic eruption. Dating back to the Minoan Bronze-Age era, the historical significance of this region makes it a very popular attraction for those who charter a yacht in Santorini. You can also avail of a tour guide, should you wish, which can be booked in advance of your visit. The remains of the town are houses in a cooler construction, meaning you can also escape from the high temperatures of Santorini in the summer months.
The sunset in Oia often makes several lists of things to see before you die – and it is certainly one of the most impressive views in Santorini. The whitewashed buildings often see crowds swarm to the roof tops and cliff faces trying to get the best view. If you want to avoid the crowds, the view from your chartered yacht offers more privacy with the same impact. If you want somewhere a little more secluded with a different perspective of the landscape of Santorini, then Akrotiri Lighthouse is the way to go. While the only way to reach this viewpoint is by car, the stunning natural views are simply delightful.
Santorini is home to a vast array of high-quality restaurants, bars, and taverns, perfect for enjoying a scrumptious meal whilst overlooking the Aegean Sea. Offering arguably the best views of the region, Lycabettus serves expertly prepared Mediterranean and Greek food. Traditional Greek dining experience is on offer in Aktaion, where the atmosphere is lively and vibrant. Or, if romance is on the cards, dock your yacht close to Firostefani where Remvi Restaurant provides the perfect ambiance for you and your significant other. Santorini really is the best place to sample food with a view!
Getting to this beautiful corner of the Aegean Sea is relatively simple thanks to a large number of international routes from major European cities, especially during the high season. If your airport does not fly direct to Santorini, then a flight to Athens followed by another short flight or trip by ferry ensures you reach your chartered yacht with ease. When arriving in Santorini airport, there are buses and taxi services on offer to help you reach the desired location. Flying from North American requires a layover in either Athens or another European city which flies directly to Santorini.
