The island began as a port town founded by Phoenicians settlers in 654BC. Shortly after under control of Carthage, it became a regular stop on the Mediterranean trade route because of its location in the Mediterranean Sea and its exports such as salt and olive oil. During your catamaran charter in Ibiza take time to explore the narrow streets of the Old Town and discover the secrets Ibiza is hiding.

The idea of the world’s best DJs, enormous clubs and parties that do not end until mid-day have taken over the minds of tourists when traveling to Ibiza. The island’s culture however is much more than this. Ibiza pronounced “Evissa” is a direct reflection of its strong ties to sea, land, and the catholic influence. The official language of the island is Catalan and there is a local dialect, Ibiceno. From it’s early Muslim settlements to the catholic remodeling, Ibiza has seen many settlers and each has an impact that can still be seen on the island today. During you catamaran charter in Ibiza, anchor in Cala Jondal close to Ibiza Town, and visit the old village Dalta Vila with the Cathedral de Santa Maria. In contrast, for last six decades the island has been known as a place to let loose. Ibiza was a haven from fascism in Spain starting from the 1930’s and in the 1960s hippies from across the world flocked the island attracted to the rural and carefree lifestyle. In the 1980s the island was the summer destination for the European youth and the clubs became famous around the globe. In 1999 the UN declared Ibiza a UNESCO World Heritage Site “Ibiza, Biodiversity and Culture”. This further pushed the idea that the island’s culture was significant to the common heritage of humanity.
Architecture in Ibiza is more than the white-washed walls and red rooftops that are sprinkled throughout the island. There are many historic buildings where you can see the island’s previous ruler’s influence directly. For example, the Ibiza Town cathedral. Originally a church established on the island in 1234, it was remodeled and completed in 1732 when the church’s status changed to a cathedral, with a gothic baroque style. Your catamaran charter in Ibiza, lets you visit the Punic Necropolis of Puig des Molins in the island’s Old town. This 2000-year-old burial ground has now been converted into museum but is still the largest necropolis in the world. Another UNESCO site to visit when exploring the architecture of the island are the ancient Phoenician settlement ruins, Sa Caleta built in 650 BC. Although only the footings of the buildings are preserved, you can see how advanced the community was. The Upper Town of Ibiza is a fortified acropolis that has stood the test of time. It was founded by the Phoenicians and was subsequently added to by successive occupiers from the Arab and Catalan periods through to the Renaissance. The last addition was the Renaissance defensive walls that surround the town. The walls did not destroy the street patterns or earlier phases of architecture but was incorporated into the existing blueprint of the town.
Located in the south of the island, this natural park is arguably one of the most impressive parts of Ibiza. Declared in 2001, the natural park spans over 3,000 hectares of land and 13,000 marine hectares. Over hundreds of years, the salt production in this area has created an intriguing landscape, a wetland. Known as a roosting and nesting site during migration periods, one of the most prevalent birds seen in the wetland are flamingos. These birds arrive on the island from august on to spend winter here. While other birds: herons, ospreys, peregrine falcons, black winged stilts, take a pit stop here on their way to warmer lands. During your catamaran charter in Ibiza, anchor at Fornells - Ses Salines and you will still be in Natural Park. This is because of the oceanic Posidonia that lie on the seabed nearby. This well preserved 100,000-year-old plant is endemic of the Mediterranean. It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage. This plant is responsible for keeping the water clear and being the home of more than 220 different species of marine life such as the Mediterranean rainbow wrasse and scorpion fish. Es Cavallet beach is also a part of the natural park. This long wild beach features very clean water and sand dunes that protect the beach and its flora from erosion. It is considered one of the first nudist beaches in Spain. From the main deck of your catamaran charter in Ibiza, you will be able to see Ses Portes watchtower. Built in the 16th century with enough artillery it protected the fishing activity, the sea passage and entrance into the city of Ibiza from pirates.
