Exploring the Dodecanese Islands

Kos

The Dodecanese Islands are often known for their glorious beaches, and Kos epitomizes this beauty. With numerous patches of pristine coastline, there really is no better way to discover the island than by boat! Begin your catamaran charter by sailing to Tigaki Beach where you’ll be met with crystal clear waters and a long stretch of powdery white sands, or head to Paradise Beach (otherwise known as ‘Bubble Beach’), where volcanic gases cause the water’s surface to bubble! From Kos you can navigate to the nearby volcanic island of Nissyros, or head onland to explore the island’s fascinating historical sites, such as the Asklepieion, founded in the third century BC.

Rhodes

Rhodes is one of Greece’s best-known islands, as well as the largest and most historically important of the Dodecanese archipelago, with it’s Old Town the largest medieval city in all of Europe! A boat rental from here will give you the opportunity to see the ancient city of Lindos, where you can visit the Acropolis – one of the most visited archaeological sites in all of Greece. Or if you’re more of a nature enthusiast, make sure you take a trip to Butterfly Valley; a place of supreme natural beauty where a vast array of butterfly species resides. Enclosed by hills and lush greenery, it’s a truly magical way to spend an afternoon in peaceful surroundings.

Samos

Samos is home to wild beauty and fascinating world heritage sites. The centre of the island is largely untarnished by tourists unlike some other areas of the Dodecanese archipelago, so makes for a great breath of fresh air. There are also a number of stunning beaches you can explore during your catamaran charter, such as Livadaki, where a cove of translucent waters meets gorgeous green hills. Or there are opportunities to try out a variety of watersports on many areas of the coast; including windsurfing, canoeing and waterskiing, and if you’re lucky you may even spot some dolphins when navigating the waters around here.

Visit: Monastery Tsambika

Located on the top of a hill about 25km south of Rhodes Town, this monastery is an important landmark on this island and definitely worth paying a visit if you moor here during your catamaran charter. The date of its construction is unknown, but it has been a sacred place for hundreds of years, believed to have miraculous powers in helping to women bear children if they pray here… Discover its intriguing history, and you’ll get the added bonus of breathtaking views which stretch as far as the ancient town of Lindos!

Sailing Conditions

The Dodecanese Islands are a dream to navigate, due to the typical Mediterranean climate ensuring long days of sunshine and high temperatures, perfectly counteracted by a blissful breeze as you cruise through the sparkling waters of the Aegean Sea. Your catamaran charter should be stress free as winds tend not to exceed 25 knots, and so you will be able to enjoy a relaxing cruise in some of Greece’s most charming islands.

Getting There

Greece is well connected to the rest of the world, and so are its islands! The Dodecanese have 3 of their own airports which can be flown into directly from Europe in the summer months, otherwise you can get there via a connecting flight to Athens – either way its easy and stress-free! Once you land, you can have a transfer straight to your catamaran charter base awaiting you, just inform your GlobeSailor advisor in advance.
