Formerly called Calcosalto (calco, for its chalk rock and salto, for its safety), Bonifacio was built on a limestone cliff over 1500 meters long and about 100 meters wide.
According to archaeological excavations, the bay of Bonifacio was occupied between 5000 and 2500 BC. The incorruptible Romans made this maritime city an axis of exchange of goods with Sardinia. From the start, these cliffs attracted settlers.
There are four airports on the island of Corsica, two of which are of interest: Ajaccio and Figari. There are also five ferry ports including Propriano, Ajaccio, Calvi, Rousse Island and Bastia.
Paris and Marseille are lucky to have the choice between Ajaccio airport and Figari airport. For Bordeaux, Toulouse and Lyon, Ajaccio is the only option. There are also flights operating from other regional mainland France cities. This is a useful website to consult if you’re planning on using public transport to get from the airport to your charter destination (language support in both French and English).
Bonifacio has two harbour structures: the marina and a commercial harbour. The former caters to vessels longer than 20 metres, but smaller boats are welcome according to the availability of remaining places (250 spaces in total). Water and electricity are available. The cove of Catena to the north of the harbour offers anchorages and moorings on days when the main harbour is saturated.
A nature destination of excellence, hiking enthusiasts in Bonifacio will be able to choose their itinerary from a vast choice of trails. Whether in the Corsican countryside, through the paths of Strada Vecia, Fenu, Bruzzi... or explore the coastline through marked paths. Numerous points of view as breath-taking as they are stunning await you from the cliffside paths.
Feel like lazing around? Choose a skippered catamaran charter in Bonifacio and go beach-hopping! Numerous charming beaches and creeks offer endless relaxation and leisure in crystal-clear waters! Tonnara beach, Petit Sperone beach or Balistra beach, take advantage of your stay to do some seaside activities. Locals will urge you to discover the grottos (S'Dragonato), Lavezzi islands, Cavallo islands, Ratino and Piana. There is also the opportunity to go snorkelling in the Nature Reserve of the Bouches de Bonifacio.
A town of art and history, Bonifacio lends itself to romantic visits organised by the Tourist Office every Tuesday and Thursday (citadel, port...). In August, take part in the "Corsica Classic", a traditional sailing regatta! For the less adventurous, concerts of Corsican polyphonic songs take place regularly in the city. Finally, don't miss out on a torchlight guided tour!
Bonifacio offers you a delicious culinary discovery through the many Corsican specialities: breads, cold-cut meats, cheeses, fish, honey, citrus fruits, olive oil, Figari wines... Sampling of local produce is not to be missed every Tuesday morning at the market of Bonifacio.
The Lavezzi archipelago is really one of the most beautiful places in Corsica. You’ll find small creeks and secluded beaches everywhere – all with dreamy blue water and encircled by large granite rocks.
Some of the more frequented include: La Cala Lazarina, a very pretty and therefore popular sandy beach. There are also a lot of boats that moor there. Achiarina beach is certainly the most popular of the islets: lots of people and boats here. Then, the iconic Sémillante shipwreck memorial. Just beyond Achiarina, you will find several corners with sand, but it is less convenient to swim because of the rocks in the water. However, it is ideal for a picnic break away from the crowds!
The lion of Roccapina, a superb pink granite sculpture naturally shaped for millennia by coastal erosion, is located at the crossroads between Sartène and Porto-Vecchio and is one of the most emblematic sites in Southern Corsica. A catamaran charter in Bonifacio is the perfect way to discover this gem and more!
